Passing by Fifth Avenue on September 2 you couldn’t help but be dazzled by the new Bergdorf Goodman window. Midtown Manhattan’s famous luxury department store has partnered with Italian stylist and fashion editor Giovanna Battaglia Engelbert to celebrate her first book: Gio_Graphy: Fun in the Wild World of Fashion, an irreverent how-to guide to dressing for every occasion.
Reflecting the fun-loving personality of the international style star dubbed a “cyber icon” by The New York Times, the showcase features a playful take on women at work—mannequins are posed as if taking a tea break on a construction site. However, this is a site for the construction of a fashion identity, where workwomen drink their tea out of porcelain and accessorize their safety helmets with handbags, heels, jewels and gowns in a galaxy of gold and plenty of sparkle—more than 100,000 Swarovski crystals’ worth of sparkle, to be precise.
IIn-store, Battaglia has created a pop-up shop selling her favourite Italian brands alongside a limited-edition t-shirt collection. Look out for the star piece, a special-edition tee that declares: “My favourite color is” and also emblazoned with a rainbow of crystals. Our fashion heroine tells us that she has “a more expansive version of the color wheel than the average person’s, and it changes, like a weather barometer. As such my favorite colors often aren’t colors. But they should be.” Indeed! If you also want to tell the world how much you love colors (real and unreal) of every hue, then you’ll have to dash, because the t-shirts are only available until September 25. And while you’re there, don’t forget to pick up a copy of her witty tome about living the glam life—it’s your new fashion bible!
