PERFECTLY IMPERFECT

“Forget your perfect offering / There is a crack in everything / That’s how the light gets in,” sang the late Leonard Cohen in his song “Anthem,” assuring us that weakness can become a strength that shines through our fault lines. It’s a powerful and empowering message that inspired South African designer Suzaan Heyns’ latest collection Fractals.

She launched Fractals on August 26 at the tenth edition of style showcase Salon 58, the brainchild of South AfricanELLE ex-editor Jackie Burger. The event was dedicated to the rejection of fashion industry norms under the theme: “Cycles.” Celebrating the beauty that can be found in imperfection, Suzaan Heyns created a fashion installation that portrayed the female life cycle in a tableau staged by eight women, each representing age milestones. With their strength of personality and rich experienceshining out, they posed in seated attitudes of quiet contemplation or stood statuesque among the guests.

Their sumptuous bridal gowns and outfits in oysterand white were given heightened drama with glamorously edgy black veils and an extraordinarily beautiful voile cape. Transparency was a major theme, proudly displaying delicate skin across the age spectrum enhanced by fractured shards oflightfrom artful arrangements of Swarovski crystals. These mimicked the behavior of fractals—never-ending repeat geometric patterns, such as those created by the natural formation of crystals.
