Season after season, year after year, there is one fashion story that never reaches “The End”— that story is denim. It’s the world’s favorite utility fabric, and its fans are forever finding new ways to treat it, style it, and embellish. So, who’s doing what to the perfect blank canvas? Currently, there is two style schools: classic blues and cool colors.
A faded blue jacket by original jeans label Levi’s harks back to the laid-back West Coast Sixties when teamed with a floral dress. This one by Preen has understated flower power. Finish the look with chunky jewels such as these earrings by Belle Starr and a ring by Rosantica at Cadenzza.
A darkest-indigo Levi’s jacket, meanwhile, rocks on-trend raw edges and moves the look across to a sharper East Coast 1950s vibe. Paige’s skinny jeans ripped at the calves, Miu Miu’s embroidered sleeveless shirt, and those oversize crystal-studded sunnies by Marilyn Monroe Eyewear is a match made in heaven. A gothic, prom Valérie Valentine cuff blitzed with Swarovski crystals, takes it to the edge.
Toning it down, Isabel Marant’s belted boxy jacket is matched with Alexa Chung jeans. The secret to maintaining a strong, de-cluttered silhouette as well as plenty of feminine allure is simplicity: a golden face glow with just a dash of dazzle from pieces like Lanvin’s brooch and Barbie’s necklace will suffice.
Dressing somewhere in the middle, Otto Linger takes the denim jacket uptown: a classic mid-indigo with bright orange stitching shows no sign of fading, and the blouson silhouette is cleverly tailored. Keep it smart with a pristine Balenciaga white shirt and emerald MAC pants with military stripe and frogging details. A crystallized gold minaudière by Inge Christopher, crystal flower earrings by Caroline Svedbom at Cadenzza, and studded Burberry boots chime cleverly with the sparkling stripe.
Moving down, a denim skirt—this one is by Eve Denim—is a versatile wardrobe staple. Dress it up with a man-size shirt by Vetements offset by some outrageously glam jewelry: St John’s brooch and shoulder-skimming waterfall earrings by Oscar de la Renta at Cadenzza have the necessary impact. The big striped shirt (Odeeh’s is fab) remains a soul mate of jeans, too. Choose those that make a design statement, such as Kings of Indigo’s patchwork-look pair. Most importantly, accessorize with feminine acumen: a glitzy cuff and some dramatic earrings (Heet and Oscar de la Renta), plus a glittering Attico pouch bag create casual elegance. Top with a Levi’s denim cap.
Cool colors start with ice-white denim. Daytime favors Dumitrascu’s shirt belted by & Other Stories. Faux pearl-dotted Reserve jeans and bag by Zara carry the palette through, accessorized with Swarovski Crystal Pearl jewelry, specially created for L.K. Bennett, and available at their stores from mid-October 2017. Nighttime loves Ellery’s cold-shoulder top, which wittily takes its style notes from the bottom (see the button-fly detail). Crystal-embellished skinny jeans by Atelier x Notify at Le Bon Marché worn under & Other Stories’ over-knee boots are a sleek ‘n’ chic pairing. To stamp real individuality on your jeans, why not get them personalized at the Atelier x Notify at Le Bon Marché? Punctuate the monochrome with the cascading Oscar de la Renta earrings featured earlier, this time in sassy scarlet.
Saving the most sensational for last, try this high-shine Prussian blue suit by Pallas Paris for dare-to-wear dazzle. The treated denim has lashings of shimmer and shine—all it needs as a finishing touch are some floral earrings by Helene Zubeldia at Cadenzza. Jeanius!
