Sunday, February 4, saw Minneapolis erupt into a carnival drenched in midnight green with the Philadelphia Eagles’ win over the New England Patriots at Super Bowl LII in a thrilling showdown. (If you were stuck in a cave on the day, the score was 41:33.)
With headline performer Justin Timberlake adding to the entertainment, it was a big occasion that called for a suitably big gesture to mark the event. That response took its lead from dazzling footwear spotted on Robert Kraft, the New England Patriots’ owner, at the Elton John AIDS Foundation’s annual New York Fall Gala in November last year, and then again at a private concert by the singer in Boston. These were custom sneakers made by Nike in black, discreetly crystallized by Swarovski (possibly inspired by the glittering Nike Air Max 97 LX “Swarovski”), with the New England Patriots’ logo on the inside of each shoe. Over the course of both events, his footwear garnered its own fan club, with Alec Baldwin said to have been caught gazing covetously at his feet!
While there’s only one pair of Robert Kraft’s custom Nikes in existence, New Era created a jaw-dropping sports cap called the “NFL 9Fifty with Swarovski Gemstones.” One of five styles created exclusively as part of New Era’s Super Bowl LII limited edition releases, this is no ordinary cap. For starters, only 12 were made: black, 100% cashmere, with the Super Bowl LII logo embroidered on the side, what turned these caps into artifacts that needed their own security is their NFL pins: consisting of ruby and sapphire Swarovski gemstones, they explain the whopping $5,252 price tag—for each cap. What a way to remember Super Bowl LII!
