Disco Brides

Haute couture collided with Euro-pop in a spectacular explosion of sparkle at MADWalk 2018, Greece’s glitziest television event of the year. While designer Vrettos Vrettakos sent his SS18 glamazons blazing down the runway, singer Eleni Foureira (Cyprus’s contestant at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest) accompanied them with a belting rendition of the 1980 hit, Gigi in Paradisco.

It was impossible to say which was the most dazzling: Foureira drew the spotlight in a bespoke Vrettakos silk crepe tux and smoking jacket: covered in 800,000 crystals in Silver Shade and Metallic Light Chrome, plus Crystal Fine Mesh with a snakeskin finish, the gleaming outfit took over 152 hours to complete. Meanwhile, on the other side of the stage, the models had been showered with one million Swarovski crystals: in a wedding collection like no other, Vrettakos had fashioned silks, lace and Crystal Mesh into slinky silhouettes inspired by the 70s disco divas of NYC’s notorious Studio 54 nightclub. Like the glimmering, shimmering spirits of Bianca Jagger, Jerry Hall and Grace Jones, these visions in white, silver and platinum sashayed along the catwalk leaving a trail of stardust. If your wedding theme is super-glam then you couldn’t do better than these deluxe body-con designs.

astly, if you missed the Eurovision Song Contest on May 12, then you missed a treat. Eleni Foureira brought Cyprus in at second place with her song Fuego in a performance made even more memorable thanks to her breathtaking outfit. Designed by Vrettos Vrettakos, the figure-hugging bodysuit consisted of nude-colored elasticated silk embellished with 590,000 hand-sewn crystal flame motifs in Light Siam, Jet Hematite, Citrine, Fireopal, Cobalt, Siam, Golden Shadow and Black Diamond, which took 300 hours to hand-apply. Without doubt, Eleni’s was by far the most fabulous costume of the evening!

The MADWalk fashion and music show took place at the Olympic Fencing Centre, Ellinikon, on March 19, 2018, and was broadcast by MAD TV in May 2018.
