Dreamgirls is Back!

Thirty-five years after Dreamgirls debuted on Broadway, the celebrated show is back—this time in London’s West End at the glamorous Savoy Theater. With music by Henry Krieger and lyrics by Tom Eyen, the musical is loosely based on the rise of The Supremes.

Set in the 1960s, a revolutionary period in American music history, Dreamgirls follows the progress of a young singing trio destined for stardom. Spotted by smooth-talking used-car salesman Curtis Taylor Jr, he names them The Dreams. What follows is a captivating journey through every one of their euphoric highs and heartbreaking lows.

It’s a show that dazzles with more than one million crystals. The glittering display is the result of a thrilling collaboration between Swarovski and two award-winning designers. Gregg Barnes’s eye-popping costumes gleam with 970,000 Swarovski crystals in 31 different cuts and colors, including slinky, show-stopping gowns for The Dreams, and dazzling jackets for the band. When the leading ladies take to the stage for the ‘Dreamgirls’ song, they shimmer in gowns embellished with 30,000 crystals each.

Tim Hatley’s spectacular set includes three incredible curtains created from more than 60,000 Swarovski crystals, which took eight people nearly 600 hours of hand threading to construct. The ‘Dreamgirls’ curtain, in four shimmering parts, weighs 400kg, while the ‘gold drop’ curtain gleams with bespoke Astral Pink and Metallic Sunshine crystal color effects. The ‘finale’ curtain combines a stunning arch-shaped crystal-drop curtain with a second section featuring 50 large clear crystals, each fitted with an LED light for a sparkling illuminated effect. This is razzle-dazzle at its high-octane best!
