India’s Most Exciting Couturier Spotlights Crystal Embroidery at the VOGUE Wedding Show 2018If you thought you knew Indian bridal attire, then look again at the stunning work of Gaurav Gupta, as seen at this year’s VOGUE Wedding Show. These heart-stopping gowns by a master of contemporary Indian couture marry the ancient with the modern to sensational effect.
The VOGUE Wedding Show, India’s luxury by-invitation-only bridal exhibition, wouldn’t be the same without the avant-traditional silhouettes of Gaurav Gupta. Sought after for his sculptural gowns—exquisite pieces that owe as much to the future as they do to ancient embroidery skills—he has changed the face of Indian couture.
This season’s couture collection, Crystal Myth, puts dazzling Swarovski crystals, Japanese bugle beads, and Zardozi embellishments under the spotlight. A type of metal embroidery, Zardozi work uses gold and silver thread plus gleaming stones to create elaborate designs. Rather than the more traditional flowing patterns, however, Gupta has brought his pieces to life with a striking angular patterning that recalls the opulent modernity of the Art Deco style.
His sumptuous signature fabrics of crêpe, chiffon, dupion, organza and net also get an update from a palette that revolves around the soft, sensuous tones of dusky pink, dove gray, champagne and teal, as well as the more conventional red. Meanwhile shoulders are laid bare and skirts have all the sinuous drape of classical Greek statuary. Breathtaking.
