Love Design, Love Crystal

Ross Lovegrove is a man with a crystal-clear vision of a sustainable future. His many collaborations with Swarovski range from The Solar Car (an exploration of how solar energy can be harnessed to achieve perpetual motion in car design) to the Swarovski Generator House (where he applies his industrial design skills to the concept of clean, off-grid existence). And there’s also his Crystal Aerospace chandelier for Swarovski Crystal Palace.

Among those who have recognized the Welsh-born designer’s contribution to contemporary living are New York’s MOMA, London’s Design Museum and Switzerland’s Vitra Design Museum. Now Paris has been added to the prestigious list, as the city’s famous Pompidou Centre celebrates Lovegrove in its latest exhibition, Convergence. The show puts the spotlight on the meeting of art, design and science in his work, and also explores how the designer draws insights from nature and evolution. Our highlight? The celebrated Solar Car: inspired by intelligent engineering in the space industry, it features 1,000 specially cut Swarovski crystals mounted via 3D-printed transparent supports onto 1,000 photovoltaic panels (phew!). You’ll also find out more about his off-grid house concept, which aims to show us how we might all “get back to nature” without having to sacrifice our urban luxuries. What’s not to love about Mr. Lovegrove!

Convergence is on at the Pompidou Centre, Paris, from April 12–July 3, 2017.
