Fashion meets art in the arch provocateur’s ultra-glam imagesWhat do you get when you cross fashion with art? Answer: Mario Testino, the high priest of ‘photography as provocation’. At once cult and mainstream, he’s the boundary-pushing talent who’s been surprising and delighting us with his ultra-glam images for thirty years.
And it’s this astonishing influence that he’s had on contemporary image making that is now being celebrated with an exhibition hosted by Berlin’s Kulturforum, supported by Swarovski, from January 20–July 25. The show’s title, Mario Testino: In Your Face, sums up a career spent taking part in, and subverting, the world of hyper-celebrity. Portraits of Kate and Gisele, Nicole and Gwyneth, Jagger, Madonna, Gaga and Beckham crackle with high-octane glamour alongside compelling visual stories and private snapshots that play on the edges of style and sensuality.
This is the exhibition’s European debut, with 125 photos that offer rare insight into the full range of Testino’s work. To mark the big occasion, Nadja Swarovski, Member of the Executive Board, Swarovski, and Moritz Wullen, Director of the Kunstbibliothek, hosted a stylish cocktail reception in the celebrated photographer’s honor on January 19, during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in Berlin. Among the guests who gathered to toast Mario Testino’s success were Vogue Germany editor-in-chief Christiane Arp, model and actress Nadja Auermann, and actor Axel Milberg and wife Judith.
