New Perspectives for Spring/Summer 2018

There’s nothing surprising about being wowed, season after season, by Swarovski’s innovative additions to its range of crystals—we’ve come to expect it—but this time it’s different. For a start, look at the naming strategy for Spring/Summer 2018’s themes: Gang Star, No Normal, Hacked Nature, and Spell Bound. Every season tells a story that taps the zeitgeist, and each theme an evocative expression of that story. For SS18, the story’s title is New Perspectives.

The crystal innovations it unveils reflect the fact that we’re living in an age of disruption with a value revolution in progress, driven by our effort to redefine ourselves. Old dividing lines are being broken down—between luxury and street, the natural and the digital, male and female, and even between opposing belief systems.

Taking its name from the street expression “gangsta”, this theme mirrors a rebel culture inspired by the hip-hop, sporty, gangsta-rap scene, which has now gone mainstream. We’re talking sportswear scrawled with graffiti-style typography and blinged up with gold statement pieces, such as oversized gangsta-style charms dangling from chains.

The Skull Flat Back perfectly matches edgier, street-inspired designs, while the new Crystal Iridescent Blue Pearls reflect the gender-neutral, active-streetwear style fusion.

It’s all about the rationalized “key piece” culture. We’re consuming less in a more considered way, and we’re more open to change than ever before.

Designs deliberately celebrate human imperfection. Metals are manipulated into complex forms created to look like extensions of the wearer’s body. The new Chris Bangle Designer Edition, with its Tilted ChatonTilted Spike and Tilted Dice Fancy Stones, works either as a pendant centerpiece or as part of an elaborate futuristic textile design. The flexible, modular Square Family’sPyramidSquare and Base Flat Backoffer endless ways to create totally different surface effects.

Although seemingly polar opposites, nature and technology have merged, forming bold new impressions that reflect a growing desire for a deeper connection with nature in an increasingly digital world. Hyper-real synthetic colors and shapes blend with nature-inspired forms in “phygital” (physical and digital) designs that create an emotionally compelling sensory overload in the designs of the future.

This desire for heightened sensory experiences is answered by the new Shimmer effect, bringing a futuristic gleam with strong crystal colors in nature-tech hues. An innovative range of Shiny LacquerPRO effects further illustrates the Hacked Nature theme, updating classic summer tones with a hyper-real edge that makes for boldly expressive styles.

As society turns away from organized belief systems toward rituals and shamanism, it looks to spells and stars for guidance, clinging to the notion that the world of magic exists. Disturbing, dark and dangerous, yet with a shimmering fairytale allure, the underworld is exposed in designs that look as though they have emerged at midnight.Jewelry has a dark baroque opulence designed to balance the body using the healing properties of crystals and the mysticism of metals, with their mysterious green, blue, silver and violet iridescence. The celestial shimmer of Crystal Galuchat’s scaly surface is unlike anything else, while the magnificent Baroque Bead and Baroque Mirror Fancy Stone evoke nostalgic historical and vintage designs.
