New Swarovski Crystal Gondolas Take a Ride up to the Klein Matterhorn Glacier Paradise Crystals are flying ever closer to the stars! Come the 2018/19 winter season, the world’s highest cableway will take its first group of passengers on a “Crystal Ride” up into the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise. Four of twenty-five new gondolas have been showered in 280,000 Swarovski crystals to light up a nine-minute journey of wonder.
Designed by Pininfarina, the Italian studio behind Ferrari and Maserati, the four special gondolas offer a high-luxe experience: Spacious seats have been molded according to the principles of high-performance car manufacture and are finished with the finest materials, including crystallized lettering. And Swarovski Crystal Rocks has been used to create a glittering representation of the Zermatt Bergbahnen mountain logo, which can be viewed from both outside and in. It’s a clever touch that refracts the light beautifully from both the starry sky-effect LED-studded ceiling and the icy sunlight. Finally, all-round glazing affords spectacular panoramic views of the mountain-scape. While the result of this top-end design is breathtaking, the true breathless moment comes as the cabin reaches a height of 170 meters. Prepare to be stunned as the opaque glass floor suddenly clears to offer a dramatic 360-degree view of an eternal world of ice and snow.
The ride finishes at the highest mountain station in Europe, nearly 4,000m above sea level on the Klein Matterhorn near Zermatt. However, this is just the first stage in the realization of a far-reaching vision: to create a continuous connection between Zermatt and Italy, the so-called “Alpine Crossing”. The grand opening of the Matterhorn glacier ride will take place on 29 September in Zermatt. Get your tickets now.
