Serkan Cura

The man who gives glamour to the Angels

Serkan Cura, the Belgian designer of Turkish heritage, found his calling as a couturier in the ateliers of Paris. His love of glamour led him to a stint at Jean Paul Gaultier in 2007. Now, he’s the man behind Victoria’s Secret’s sultry shows and his own dramatic couture line. Katharina Kowalewski spoke to the designer about his fascination for Swarovski crystals.

Talking to Serkan Cura, you can’t help noticing the passion behind every sentence: “My work is my life. I work from morning till evening, Monday to Sunday”. This passion started at the age of thirteen when he discovered antiques and flea markets, garments and fashion. “I still get most of my inspiration from those markets. I used to collect old Swarovski crystals, feathers and materials there. I own pieces you can’t even find in museums.”

His love for Swarovski is a love of perfection. “Perfect materials, perfect shine, perfect finish. I can’t be satisfied with anything else. My work is very precise, very technical. Sometimes I need a certain shade, a certain shape, and only Swarovski has the huge palette that can satisfy my desire for perfection,” says the designer, who splits his life between his atelier in Paris and time spent in New York, where he does his work for Victoria’s Secret. On his Instagram account you see him next to the most beautiful models in the world, such as Adriana Lima and Maria Borges. Serkan knows their bodies better than anyone, as all his corsets are actually made from scratch on the Angels’ bodies.

Serkan Cura Couture, his own label, means total freedom to him: “I do what I love. I have so much fun experimenting and going further and further in my research. For my next collection it’s going to be very sculptural, almost architectural.” His dresses remind one of body jewelry. “Everything is made to measure on the models’ bodies. I love working like that and creating sculptures out of Swarovski crystals that wrap the body completely.“ He embellishes almost all his designs with Swarovski crystals, in fact—it’s his signature—with some spectacular masterpieces made entirely out of crystals.

“More and more people wanted just a single piece from these creations, but couldn’t afford it—that’s why I created the rings,” explains Cura. “This way, those who want to wear a touch of Serkan Cura every day can do so. They were a hit during last season’s fashion week.” Jewelry seems like a natural extension to his haute couture—more accessible for Serkan Cura fans, and a way to share his sparkling vision with many more people.

“The rings are inspired by nature, by branches. I am in awe of all creation. I love to look at flowers at this time of year. I’ve just taken a trip to the outskirts of Paris: everything I see in spring and summer inspires and nourishes my work, so I just want to capture it and share the beauty I see around me.” His mission is simply to make people dream—it’s his hidden philosophy, his driving force.
“We need more beauty in this world and maybe some sweetness”, says Serkan, who not only loves Swarovski but also loves indulging in chocolate. You can’t help wanting to be his best friend and hang out at his atelier, letting him show you the newest inventions, research and technical advances. It’s the place where fashion is an art form—skill and love, all in one.
