Indian opulence and contemporary style
“They’re like moon dust…alluring, and particularly lovely at night.” Tarun Tahiliani describes his passion for Swarovski crystals. It’s the latest in a series of exclusive video interviews to mark Swarovski’s 120th anniversary, and he’s surrounded by what must be some of the most exquisite embroidery on the planet.
Armed with a degree from Wharton School of Business in the US, Tarun Tahiliani returned to India and spotted the vast potential of the evolving garment industry. He then decided to hone his knowledge with a degree from New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology. Since 1990, he has been reinventing the traditional Indian aesthetic, creating couture, diffusion and prêt-a-porter collections that are Indian in sensibility, yet international in appeal—a fusion of stunning textiles, refined luxury, meticulous tailoring with his signature understanding of drape. Taking the very best of India’s rich heritage and skillful embellishment, he has combined these qualities with the latest Italian pattern-cutting techniques and innovative technologies such as digital textile printing. The result is a unique and beautiful East-meets-West signature style. He has showcased his collections at fashion weeks in New York, London, Milan, Tokyo, Dubai, Singapore, Hong Kong, Moscow, South Africa and Karachi.
Watch the video and marvel at the incredibly fine thread work, exuberant color, elegant drapery and sparkle—it is, quite simply, the most sumptuous high fashion you are likely to see.
