1001 Stories Of The Street

Streetstyle grows up and goes east

As cultures clash and time zones crumble, more and more designers are saying, “Just look outside! That’s where the barriers are being broken.” Street style has grown in stature, making the boulevard the true runway of the real.

With the sandy colors of Parisian stone buildings for a backdrop, Veronika Heilbrunner dashes past a camera flash in a Chloé dress as though she’s just crossed the Sahara. The Lawrence of Arabia look can be found in all four corners of the world—these three ladies look like we’ve chanced upon a meeting of the tribes. Clara Racz shows that you can pep up your blue jeans uniform with a folkloric vest. With a twist of irony, Tiany Kiriloff does a rain dance in the Paris streets. Ksenia Solovieva vamps the Ballets Russeslook, while Vika Gazinskaya brings back another staple of our collective Saint Laurent past: the suit matched with silk head scarf.

This is not a trend. It’s the future. Globetrotting gives way to the exchange of ideas and the embracing of differences. Fashion forward, it’s not your grandmother’s Orientalism—though we’ll take her turban any day…
