Backstage Beauties

We peep behind the curtain at Fashion Week

Checking out upcoming beauty trends at Fashion Week is like stepping into a time machine. Spring/Summer 2016’s catwalk looks were a celebration of beauty in all its forms, from effortlessly chic makeup to bold lip color and wild hair. While all eyes were on the clothes on the runway, we snuck backstage to check out what was happening behind the curtain, thanks to photographer Sonny Vandevelde.

For next summer, the major trend is “come as you are,” with designers letting models’ natural beauty shine through. Over at Versace it was a celebration of buzz-cuts and crazy curls. At Balmain, le slick was chic! Makeup was simple but elegant with strong brows and contouring, in perfect contrast to the high ponytails bound with hair extensions. Marni was all about baby-doll looks with grown-up pigtails and Sixties-style exaggerated eyelashes courtesy of makeup artist Tom Pecheux. Altuzarra went au naturel with a more minimalist, earthy, she-really-did-wake-up-like-this look, and long flowing locks pulled back into a twisted V-shape. Burberry also went for an effortless makeup effect with the models sporting silky-smooth satin skin, minimal eye makeup, natural contouring and highlights, and hot red ‘Oxblood’ lipstick.

At the other end of the spectrum, Vivienne Westwood’s faces were painted with crazy colors. For Paul Smith, hair was pulled back tightly and twisted into figure eight-shaped works of art by stylist Tina Outen. At Proenza Schouler, hairstylist Anthony Turner also pulled hair back and attached a long simple braid for a sleekly confident look. Raw beauty stole the show at Alexander Wang, where individuality was celebrated, makeup was minimal, hair was let loose, and every model showed her unique personality.
