Standout Detailing Makes a Statement on this Season’s Crystal-embellished Abaya, Jilbab and Lehenga Choli
Traditional dress has never looked so chic. Among the season’s big trends are layers, ruffling and surprising details, as well as the kind of next-level embellishment that always makes us gasp. We focus the gaze on stunning designs by luxe labels from across the Middle East, Indonesia and India, accessorized by the designers such as Bawal, Dorsa and Tarun Tahiliani.
Dresses come in luxurious, muted tones of champagne, café crème, rosé, jasmine and burnished gold. The long, heavily embroidered bodice of Zainab Chottani’s stunning gown contrasts golden shades with emerald-colored Swarovski crystals, an exquisite palette reflected in a striking cuff by Gaurav and strappy heels from Joy Shoes. Dar Al Hanouf shows off finely detailed floral embroidery featuring sparkling crystal frosting and a graceful neckline. Tarun Tahiliani’s blooming drop earrings are all that’s needed to complete this fit-for-a-princess look. Maria B’s long-sleeve crystal-encrusted gown makes the most of the silky luster of Swarovski Crystal Pearls dropped from cuffs and festooned across the neckline and a layered hem. Finally, a blush-toned feminine lehenga choli by Sania Maskatiya is enhanced with some extraordinarily accomplished crystal embroidery. Heels by Joy Shoes and shimmering fringed earrings by Suneet Varma complete the breathtaking effect.
Abu Dhabi-based Rizwan catches the light with a diaphanous jilbab covered in crystallized flourishes, fastened over a dove-gray under-layer. Dynamic patterning is again used to sensational effect in the sparkling curlicues animating the black abaya by Hanayen; a crystal-trimmed Ezma hajib is the finishing touch. Exciting Indonesian label Si.Se.Sa. heightens the drama with bright layers combined with rich florals and crystal trimming. Meanwhile, Abaya Al Qattan draws the eye to the back with crystallized laced-ribbon decoration set against powder pink satin that recalls the fine corsetry of fin de siècle Paris. A crystal-adorned scarf by Naelofar complements the midnight-black ribbon.
Accessories come courtesy of Dorsa, a brand with a keen eye for ultra-contemporary detailing; we love the randomized-gem studding on its Tehran bag, and its asymmetric-jewel bracelet. Malaysian masters of the scarf, Bawal Exclusive, also understand how to dial up the detail. It gives classic taupe a modern makeover with a light dusting of crystals and a stunning crystallized dragonfly motif. The perfect complement to Hanayen’s textured taupe jilbab.
