Knit an Match

There’s more to keeping warm than simply pulling on a wooly sweater. This season’s knits do both high-end elegance and on-trend cool, and they do it effortlessly. Get the look by styling lean layers of plain woolens against striking patterns, offset with sparkling statement jewelry.

Aristocratic charm gets a modern makeover when strings of silky Swarovski Crystal Pearls are draped over Allude’s cream turtleneck and set against a striped V-neck sweater by Closed; Ben-Amun’s necklace and Erickson Beamon’s earrings (both at Cadenzza) give an extra touch of class. Delphine-Charlotte Parmentier’s stunning Crystal Pearl bib necklace, lying seductively against the throat of Iris von Arnem’s oyster silk blouse, adds to the effect. Slashes of fall color come courtesy of Missoni’s stylish check wrap.

Indeed, wraps are the cleverest way to do layers when temperatures are so changeable, or when you need to glide from taxi to dinner date. Try Alexander McQueen’s gorgeous fern and floral-patterned wool-jacquard wrap for perfectly understated fall chic. King of cashmere William Sharp’s crystallized mini-dress, worn over Odeeh’s wool pants, accessorized with Oscar de la Renta at Cadenzza’s fabulous tassel earrings, is just the outfit for a date.

Otherwise, daytime layering exudes classic style. Play with textures and a pared-back palette: velvety corduroy pants and a plain tee by Dries van Noten work well with Iris von Arnim’s tactile cashmere jacket and long ribbed scarf by Michael Kors. Jewelry echoes the layered theme and gives “cozy” an edge of brilliance. Karl Lagerfeldnecklaces, a bracelet by ALEX AND ANI, plus a Roberto Cavalli at Cadenzza ring, hit just the right note.

When it’s time to show off your trend credentials, Odeeh’s 60s-inspired rust and blue jacket with mustard pants, mismatched with a striped turtleneck by LaLa Berlin has kaleidoscopic cachet. Shourouk’s crystal statement necklace keeps it eye-popping. Alternatively, get the hot-off-the-runway sports-luxe look by wearing a ribbed, knitted zip-up shirt by Sandro under a crystal-embellished sleeveless dress by Monica Mastella. (Note how the V-neck shape is echoed in the dress’s neckline, and the collar and chevron stripe of the shirt.) The graphic starkness of this look is balanced by rococo swirls and a single colorful earring by Anton Heunis at Cadenzza. Another Sandro item—striped sweatpants—demonstrates how to carry off the athleisure trend during the colder months. In an update on the 80s Sloane (think Lady Di meets Sporty Spice) they are topped with a crisp, striped shirt pinned at the throat by Melissa Kandiyoti at Cadenzza’s brooch, plus a fluffy nude sweater by Closed. Earrings BySimon and a Brosway bracelet and ring lend subtle sparkle.

Or just take it easy and snuggle into Laura Biagiotti’s chunky-rib sweater hung with outsize cuts of icy crystal. A bloom of carmine from Oscar de la Renta at Cadenzza is the only accessory you’ll need.
